The cubes show early 17th-century Dutch tiles. Such polychrome tiles were produced in large numbers in

Holland before the famous blue and white Delft tiles came into fashion. The technique of their production,

which used only four colours, had been imported from southern Europe. Many southern motifs, too, such as

pomegranates and bunches of grapes, were used at first. Later the decoration came to include typically Dutch

images, such as tulips and the Lion of the national coat of arms.

Not so long ago many Dutch women – often daily, but especially on Sundays and feast days – wore
the traditional dress of their region. Today this tradition with its curious shawls, caps and jewellery, is
in danger of disappearing and it is time we become more familiar with this fascinating part of Dutch

Ever since the Middle Ages the Dutch have drained long narrow strips of land in the wet, low-
lying country and laid straight canals in between. This system of reclaiming land is unique in
the world and created the landscape of Holland today: a geometrical pattern of either green
grass dotted with black and white cows, or colourful bulb fields, with farms, windmills and
    pollarded trees on the horizon.

Create your own Dutch landscape with this small wooden set: put some cows in a meadow
with canals and pollarded trees or configure a flowery bulb field in front of a typical Dutch
    horizon.

    Herring in a roll

Dutch people have been eating herring for centuries: just held by its tail, or on a roll with

some finely chopped onion. Herring is healthy and delicious, but it has also contributed

greatly to the wealth of the Netherlands. The large fishing fleet and the fishermen's

seamanship were also used on trading expeditions and voyages of discovery. The 'Golden

Age' of Holland was partly due to the humble herring.

This cuddly herring in a roll is nice and soft and looks a treat!

All famous earthenware known as ‘Delft blue’ is based on porcelain exported from China to
Holland in the early 17th century. The Dutch loved its simple blue and white colouring and its
excellent quality. It was so popular that attempts to imitate this eastern porcelain were made
almost immediately. After a period of experiments ‘Delftware’ came into being.

    Bathing in history

    Lotto carpet bath towel

This bath towel is a ‘Lotto’ carpet, called after the Italian painter Lorenzo Lotto, who in 1542

was one of the first artists to depict them in his paintings.

In the Low Countries these carpets were popular with the famous masters of the 17th century:

Van Honthorst, Metsu, Brueghel, Van Dijk, Steen and Vermeer. They added an exotic touch

and were considered a status symbol: spread on the floor beneath the feet of saints and

princes, or on the table of wealthy merchants and worthy city notables.

Lotto carpets probably originated from Anatolia and characteristically have a central field

design of yellow arabesques on a red ground. The borders vary: ‘Kufic script’ design,

cartouches or a cloud band. The arabesques of the centre field were made in three different

styles: the Anatolian, the kilim or decorated style.

This carpet has a ‘kilim’ field and a cartouche border.

    Unbreakable Delftware

    Delft blue skittle garniture

A garniture is a set of vases placed on top of a cabinet for display. Originally garnitures were

altar vases imported from China, but in the 17th-century Delft craftsmen started to copy

them, like they copied other popular blue and white porcelayn from China. At first the Dutch

products were decorated with Chinese motifs, but Delft craftsmen later introduced their own

designs giving the vases a much more European look.

This very special garniture is an authentic copy as well as a decorative, unbreakable and safe

    toy.

The centre of Amsterdam is famous all over the world for its canals, with their many bridges
and lovely houses. The city did not grow slowly and naturally; every new extension was
carefully planned. The three most important canals were dug from 1613: The Heren-, Keizers-
and Prinsengracht ( Lords', Emperor's and Prince's Canals). Long narrow building sites of
equal width were sold. As a result the fronts of the houses, too, all have the same widht and
give the canals an orderly look. The facades do not present a monotonous picture, however,
for a great diversity of gables was used.

This waterproof play canal is easy to assemble and fits on any bathtub, shower basin or baby
bath. It can also be built and played with on a table or on the floor.

The Amsterdam house of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), Holland's famous painter.

The model reproduces the environment in which the artist lived and worked. It also stands in the tradition of

17th-century ornate cabinets and dolls' houses.

The front door opens into the hall. Next to the hall is the Sijdelcaemer, the side room, where Rembrandt received

his clients. Above is the studio, with easel, the side table where paints were mixed and a dais for the model to sit

on. On the next floor is the Kunstcaemer, a room full of exotic and precious objects: a crocodile hanging from

the ceiling, antique busts on the shelves and antlers on the walls.

More than 50 pieces of furniture, objects and paintings complete the interior. The human figures are derived

    from Rembrandt's work.
