Bathing in history
Lotto carpet bath towel
This bath towel is a ‘Lotto’ carpet, called after the Italian painter Lorenzo Lotto, who in 1542
was one of the first artists to depict them in his paintings.
In the Low Countries these carpets were popular with the famous masters of the 17th century:
Van Honthorst, Metsu, Brueghel, Van Dijk, Steen and Vermeer. They added an exotic touch
and were considered a status symbol: spread on the floor beneath the feet of saints and
princes, or on the table of wealthy merchants and worthy city notables.
Lotto carpets probably originated from Anatolia and characteristically have a central field
design of yellow arabesques on a red ground. The borders vary: ‘Kufic script’ design,
cartouches or a cloud band. The arabesques of the centre field were made in three different
styles: the Anatolian, the kilim or decorated style.
This carpet has a ‘kilim’ field and a cartouche border.
